Henna and the Spirit
“My beloved is to me a cluster of henna blossoms from the vineyards of En Gedi” The Song of Songs
This 2 hour class taking place at 7pm UK time on the 24th of October on zoom. A pre recorded class aswell as the live zoom recording will be available for those who cannot attent the event live.
This class is an in-depth exploration of the spiritual tradition of the Henna plant. It is the culmination of 6 years of relationship and both academic and non-academic research and feeling into this sacred practice.
We will dive into how and why Henna is present in huge life cycle rituals, its presence for both mama and baby in birth, how it was used in burial rituals and of course its use in marriage and many other threshold moments. The is deeply rooted and traces of its presence are found in the roots of the memory of many cultures and peoples. Through its ancient history, we will explore the properties of the plant and the relationship humans formed with it throughout thousands of years. There will be a particular focus on the Henna plants’ spiritual presence in life cycle rituals as a carrier of "baraka" or blessings in Morocco.
What has changed in the way that we use Henna? Why has henna become something superficial, devoid of meaning and extracted from its true essence? How has our globalised world affected such a precious and intimate practice? We will explore together how to bring back meaning, rootedness and joy into our relationship with Henna, this means delving into how we can be in ritual with her again in a way that deeply honours her divinity.
If everything in existence, by virtue of its existence is in remembrance of the Beloved, what is the remembrance of Henna? What does she utter to the great Divine and to the divine within us?
Please bring your sweet selves, some henna in any form if you have some available and a notebook and pen.
